Measuring the impact of travel times and station location on job and housing accessibility helps shape Australia's biggest public transport project: Sydney Metro West.

In November 2016, the NSW Government announced Australia's biggest public transport project - Sydney Metro West – the city’s next underground metro railway which plans to deliver about 24 kilometres of underground rail between Westmead and the Sydney CBD. The Metro will double the rail capacity between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD, with a travel time target between the two centres of about 20 minutes.

In 2018, the Committee for Sydney, Sydney Business Chamber and the Sydney Business Chamber, Western Sydney engaged SGS to undertake some high-level modelling to better understand the potential population and job distribution impacts of the Sydney Metro West in the context of Metropolitan strategic planning and transport policy.

Our project team used the SGS Transport Impact Model to measure housing, jobs and effective job density impacts of travel scenarios. We examined scenarios focusing on 15, 20 and 25 minute travel times between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD.

SGS Economics and Planning Sydney Metro West report

The report shows that Sydney Metro West will increase jobs and dwellings along this crucial Sydney corridor under every scenario - but the quicker the journey time the more jobs in Sydney’s west.
