Social Impacts of Climate Change in the ACT

Social Impacts of Climate Change in the ACT

Recent reports have emphasised that the social impacts of climate change will affect society disproportionately, and will effect low income households most. Comprehensive and well funded policies and programs that seek to mitigate or minimise price increase effects on the most vulnerable households should be established ahead of or at the same time as carbon pricing and other climate change responses that will increase the cost of essential goods and services.

SGS recently completed a study for the ACT Government, which looked into how the physical effects of climate change are likely to translate into economic and social impacts for households in the ACT.  It identified households vulnerable to climate change within the ACT and recommended policy actions to mitigate the social impacts.

The concepts and methodology used in this study have potential to be more broadly applicable to other regions around Australia.  This paper will discuss the findings of this study, policy implications and the broader implications of the findings.
