A just-released research study by SGS Economics and Planning, together with Design Urban and City of Melbourne, concludes that residential development along tram corridors could make a significant contribution to new housing and improving amenity. In 2008, Victoria's Department of Planning and Community Development (DPCD) commissioned the research study to better understand how tram corridors might contribute to meeting Melbourne's growing housing needs. The research project identified the barriers and opportunities to promote tram corridors as preferred locations for housing, considered preferred urban design and built form outcomes and tested the feasibility of development from an industry perspective. The research was based around two case study corridors: Route 112 in the City of Darebin and Route 96 in the City of Moreland.
