State Housing Project in New Zealand Receives $52 Million Kick-Start

Melbourne, 12 May 2009 — SGS Economics and Planning was engaged by Housing New Zealand to provide advice on housing policy issues, redevelopment options and to provide implementation strategies for public housing estates in Glen Innes, Auckland. SGS was part of a team consisting of HNZ personnel working with Australian and New Zealand based consultants.

In an announcement by the Housing Minister, Phil Heatley, on 5 May, the project has been given the green light – receiving ‘kick-start investment’ of $52 Million, which will ‘launch of one of the largest urban renewal projects undertaken in New Zealand’.

Minister Heatley described the project as 'a hugely ambitious 20 year project which seeks to transform a strategically important community facing considerable social and economic challenges, into a thriving, prosperous place to live.'

SGS provided advice in the areas of options evaluation from a financial and cost benefit point of view and on aspects of the wider ‘community renewal’ program including economic and social development aspects.

SGS participated in the workshops where the renewal program was developed in collaboration with key stakeholders and community representatives.
