Melbourne Quarterly Seminar - Melbourne's Economy: A Stunning Success or Captured by Complacency
Terry Rawnsley, Associate Director of SGS spoke on 15 September 2011 on Melbourne's Economy
To guarantee a fair and prosperous city into the future we need government and business to work together to unlock our productivity potential.
Over the past 30 years, macroeconomic policy settings, and microeconomic reform combined with spatial policy initiatives played a crucial role in Melbourne's transformation from a so-called rust-belt economy in the early 1990s to the post-industrial knowledge intensive economy we have today.
The past five years have seen reforms slow and the growth in the productivity of Melbourne's workers weaken. Ensuring the future prosperity of Victoria will require a new generation of reforms and infrastructure investments.
The latest frontier in boosting Australia's productivity lies in the way we spatially organise and manage our cities.
