Measuring and capturing the value from metropolitan planning; lessons from Melbourne and Dublin - SGS Occasional Paper

by Dr Marcus Spiller, a Principal and Partner of SGS Economics and Planning.

"Measuring and capturing the value from metropolitan planning; lessons from Melbourne and Dublin" focuses on the modern challenge of improving urban management. It firstly revisits the economic warrant for effective urban planning at the metropolitan level. Then it discusses the efficacy of metropolitan governance, with reference to recent experience in Melbourne and Dublin.

The paper is the product of a 3 week sabbatical at the National University of Ireland Maynooth in November 2011 when Dr Spiller conducted research on metropolitan governance issues. SGS Economics and Planning Pty Ltd operates a sabbatical scheme under which Partners in the firm may undertake study tours, attend conferences or undertake focussed research in particular areas of interest aligned with the objectives of the company.
