The economic contribution of the food industry
The Victorian Local Governance Association recently released the report "Integrating Land Use Planning and and Community Food Security: A New Agenda for Government to Deliver on Sustainability, Economic Growth and Social Justice". The project was funded by VicHealth and was conducted by the Community Planning and Development Program at La Trobe University with SGS providing cutting edge economic analysis.
In 2007-08, SGS estimated that the food sector in Victoria represented $36.2 billion (15.0% of Victoria's Gross Value Added), of which $21.2 billion originated in Melbourne (12.3% of Melbourne's Gross Value Added). The food industry employed 366,000 people in Victoria of which 210,000 were employed in Melbourne.
