36 million - Fact or Fiction?
What should the public policy response be to Australia's projected population? What are the sustainability challenges of population increase? How should we respond at the local level and through the design of our suburbs? How can cities plan and provide for sufficient housing and infrastructure? Some of Australia's leading thinkers on sustainable development Dr Graham Turner, Roderick Simpson and Dr Marcus Spiller discussed these issues at the SGS Canberra seminar '36 Million - Fact or Fiction?' held on 31st March 2010.
Dr Taylor is a Senior Research Scientist, Sustainable Ecosystems at CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems based in Canberra. His work involves whole-of-system analysis on the long-term physical sustainability of the Australian environment and economy.
Roderick Simpson, Director, Simpson+Wilson Architects, has over thirty years experience in architecture, master planning and urban design. He has been an active advocate of ecologically sustainable design principles, culminating in the formulation of "BASIX" the NSW Building Sustainability Index that applies to all residential development in NSW.
Dr Marcus Spiller is a Director of SGS and an urban economist and planner with extensive experience in public policy analysis. He is an Adjunct Professor in Urban Management at the University of Canberra, a Past National President of the Planning Institute of Australia and a former Board member at VicUrban.
